Shopping for plant material can be an expensive day out; here are a few tips on how to get the most for your dollar.
- Always keep in mind the conditions of your garden, is it sunny, shady, or a mix of both?
- Go with a plan, this will help you stay on track and avoid buying plants that you don’t need. It’s similar to the rule of not shopping for groceries when you’re hungry.
- Buy plants in smaller containers. Smaller plant material is easier to plant, more often then not healthier then plants in larger containers, and it saves you money.
- Choose the best looking plants. Avoid plants with broken branches and plants with discolored, missing, or chewed leaves.
- Look at the roots. Carefully lift the plant from the pot and expect the roots, you want the roots to fill the pot, but not be so tightly packed that it’s difficult to free them from the soil.
